3 Tips For Buying A Home At Auction

By Will Robins

August 12, 2020

If you’re hoping to get a home for a great price and are willing to put in some work on your end to do it, buying a home from auction could be a great option for you. However, getting your home this way isn’t for the faint of heart. So if this is an adventure that you’re wanting to take on, here are three tips that will make buying a home at auction a little easier for you to manage.

Get Familiar With The Auction Experience

In order to find success with buying a home through an auction, you’re going to want to know how an auction works before you get into the situation where you’re bidding on the home you want.

To do this, Sarah Davis, a contributor to Money Under 30, recommends that you spend a few days visiting your county’s auction so that you can get a feel for how it works and what you might need to do to successfully bid on a house. Different places are going to run their auctions a little differently, so it’s good to know what you’re going to be dealing with ahead of time. It’s also a good idea to try to match the mood of the room so that you’re not showing that you’re not too excited or disappointed when you get the home you want or if the house you’d wanted to buy goes to someone else.

Have Your Finances In Order

Before you can get a home at auction, you’ll need to make sure that your finances are in order.

While you can get a home loan that will give you the money you need to finance buying a house in most cases, purchasing a home through an auction is different. According to Jamie Wiebe, a contributor to Realtor.com, you’ll have to have the cash to pay for the house upfront if you’re getting it at auction. Knowing this, you’ll need to either save up a lot of money or find some other way to get the cash you’ll need to buy the property.

Research The Home You Want To Bid On

When buying a home at auction, you won’t have the luxury of seeing the home entirely before you bid on it. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to go into the situation blind.

Before buying a home at an auction, DaveRamsey.com recommends that you do a lot of research beforehand. Not only should you stop by the house and try to look around the property and through the windows if you can, but you should also research the neighborhood and anything you can learn from public records about the property and its surrounding area.

If you’re hoping to save money on a home by buying one at auction, use the tips mentioned above to help you find success through this process.
