For instance, a simple message stating how you value them for trusting you with their email address could help you engage your audience better. One of the biggest advantages that email marketing has over other forms is the ability to make it personalized, so make sure you use that to your advantage.

  • Use good subject headings

You need to draw the customer in so you have to make sure your email subject is compelling. This also ties in with the concept of personalization as you can try addressing the recipient’s name of the mail directly in the subject heading. It’s also important to use hooks such as posing a question in the heading or using interesting subject lines.

Questions are a great way to get recipients to open mails as well since this banks on people’s innate curiosity and bravado.

  • Segment your mailing list

Breaking up your mailing list into smaller groups is important. This is related to the previous concept of personalization. Since the typical mailing list is extensive, it’s natural that people on your list may have little in common.

To create a more personalized touch and increase your email open rates, divide your list into different demographics such as age or what they’ve purchased from you previously. You can then send each segment a targeted message that they’ll be able to better relate to.  This can greatly improve the likelihood that your emails are opened which is backed up by research.

  • Beat the Spam Filter

The greatest threat to any email marketing campaign is spam filters. They are literally designed to prevent email marketing campaigns. However, there are ways around them. Avoid using all caps in headings or clichéd power words that will automatically trigger most spam filters.

Having an IP address that is not linked with spam is also vital and so is using a domain that hasn’t been flagged. Terms associated with sales pitches will also trigger most spam filters so it’s best to avoid any of the following phrases: cash, savings, and discount. If you wish to use such phrases include them in an image attached to the email.

It’s, of course, best to only email people who have signed up to your mailing list to avoid being identified as spam. It’s also a good idea to ask those on your mailing list to specifically mark emails from you as not spam.

  • Know your customers’ habits

We all have little routines, some of us check our emails first thing and others do it after lunch or maybe as late as before sleep. This is why knowing when your customers open their emails is important. Many people receive a number of emails every day and often pay little attention to any but the first few emails they get.

To improve your chances of having your emails opened, you must send them your emails at a time they’re most likely to open it. Of course, the info itself is impossible to gauge but something as dividing your mailing list into different time zones can vastly improve your email’s open rates.

It has been shown that people are far less likely to open their emails on weekends and as such, it could be a waste to send emails on Fridays, Saturdays, and late or early Sundays. For the best results, you should focus sending emails around breakfast time and after lunch time in each particular time zone. However, don’t just take our word for it and test the times where you get your best results as well.

  • Make your content mobile-friendly

We live in a world of smartphones and most people have moved all forms of contact onto their phones, including email. As such, people now often only read their personal emails on their phones and the only time they check emails on a computer is at work.

For this reason, all businesses should aim to make any email they send compatible with a mobile phone device. People are far less likely to read an email if the information contained within does not fit their smartphone screen. It has also been estimated that 40% of all emails are opened on phones so it’s vital that any email sent is optimized to be read on such devices.

The point of an email marketing campaign is to advertise your product or service to potential customers. However, most people like to skip advertisements, so you need to provide a second magnet to attract the reader’s attention.

You can, of course, inversely convey the ladder by having your top item be the next tier after the lead magnet. This can then create the illusion of increased value as your products descend in price.

Additionally, it’s an excellent way to identify early on the customers who will purchase your high-end items straight away. These would likely be the same people who would be willing to commit to buying your lower end products most of the time.

So that’s how a value ladder works and what it should look like, but how does that aid you in building email subscribers?

Well, it’s all based on how the ladder is structured. Just like how a customer is more likely to be a subscriber when they find value in your content and advice, they’re also far likely to sign up to your mailing list if they have purchased or received something. The value ladder also creates the idea that there is value to be had or deals and offers will be available and the only way to be aware of them is to be part of the email list.

I decided to write this post after having a few friends ask me about how to rank their website. They wanted to rank for terms that I thought were fairly easy to rank for. Their sites were preventing them from ranking for the terms, so there was no need for some backlinks (yet). I took the experiment (turned it into a case study of sorts) and decided to walk through exactly what I did. I could definitely say that the results have been fantastic overall!

They had one main site that we focused on. It was in the “Selling To Real Estate Agents” space. That meant theirs was a niche, specific to them. They could contact real estate agents directly to drive traffic but they wanted the evergreen kind of organic traffic. They also needed CRO (Conversion Rate Optimization) but I knew that would come with being successfully ranked. Simply put, they needed an overhaul to the max.

What was holding their sites back from ranking at all?

The first thing I looked at was their actual word count. This sucks for most site creators but the reality is that “large” sites rank easier in Google than smaller sites. The sheer volume of on-page SEO that you can perform on a 1,000-page site makes it easier to rank than a 10-page site.

They didn’t have this luxury. They had small service based sites focused on two things:

  1. They needed specific target audiences
  2. They were looking for shoppers, not readers

This looks like the perfect case for Facebook Ads and Google Adwords and while that’s true (they were already running ads), it’s nice to get constant and consistent traffic without buying it all the time. Cash is a limited resource for every business especially small website owners.

The biggest factor that’s holding back their site was the amount of in-depth information they were offering on each of the pages. The second factor was the number of pages. Period.

The information they were sharing, while specific and good, was limited. They weren’t delivering quality in terms of writing and that had shown in their content. The overall site was designed well but was lacking in sheer content. It also didn’t help that they had overly complicated menus. It seems to be conveying the message that they’re afraid people would miss something.

There also weren’t enough opt-in options and no reason to opt-in, anyways. The site was short on word count and didn’t have many backlinks (15 total) when we started. It barely was indexed and what I would call “still had the wrapper” on it.

Why I Didn’t Tell Them To Just Write Daily (Blog)

I realize that content marketing is popular. The fact that they couldn’t write well meant we were years away from having any kind of content that would naturally help them gain rankings through shares. They also had a limited budget today and that wouldn’t likely get better just because they were starting to write.

Writing and delivering content takes time. And that time could’ve also been used to manually push traffic to their site or offers. They were in business because they could close and had a good product. What was keeping them afloat were the ads they ran and their individual email product pitches to people. They just weren’t going to make the next big jump until they were seen as an authority in their space which meant that they needed an authority website.

Writing daily sounds like great advice and it may be if you’re starting a blog. If you’re trying to sell something (you already have product) then you need people, not articles.

People coming to a site and reacting means what they need is to sustain this kind of attention. They needed to have their website to convert some of the attention into something that will return a profit for them. That’s where I came in. I was there to help them scale by helping them build an organic ranking website.

What They Needed From Me Exactly to Rank

What they needed was a plan and that’s exactly what I did first. We then made a detailed attack plan that they should execute.

They needed a process and that’s when we found them a writer and showed them how to feed the right info to their writer so they can build content that converts and with call-outs that grab opt-ins.

They also needed email sequences to send to people who opted in. I don’t discuss this part much in this article but we wrote them a 20-part email series using our very own template. If you want the same thing, sign up and just save our emails and use them as templates.

We also built out their process more even after their rankings have improved. We took their writer to become a weekly contributor and had the writer add an email series and guest posts to their list of chores. We then set up their outreach campaign to run consistently.

They ended up having a perfect process for growing from where we started. They now consistently get links, in-depth posts, guest posts, and new emails to add to their email sequences—all on autopilot, in fact.

Limited Budget Responses to Ranking Websites

Content is king. Well, guess what? Content is also not cheap.

That’s the perfect headline for anyone that tells you to do “content marketing” like it’s the easiest thing in the world.

We needed a solution that was cost-effective for ranking a smaller site. Here’s why:

A hundred articles at $40 a piece was just about the budget for the entire project which is $6,000 in total. But that still wouldn’t produce enough content to make their site larger than it should be and would have no meaningful impact. Since we couldn’t just push content around, we had to work with precision in mind.

We decided instead to have them invest their time. They would outline and research the main points and talking points around each keyword we were targeting (I showed them my videos for this). They needed a bit of training but they could invest five hours a few days in a row and detail out 4 or 5 posts in that time.

They actually took this one step further. They recorded themselves as they browsed over the top ranking websites for their search terms. They took notes of the main points to include and how to word them in a way that’s much more compelling!

They then paid someone to transcribe them into documents for the writer. This meant there were sometimes 2,000-word dissertations for the writer to break down and transform into meaningful content.

Looks like finding a writer just got more important and difficult… SMH

Hiring a Writer When You Suck at Writing

Let’s face it. Not everyone can just write a 2,000-word detailed post out of thin air. That’s the reality.

Google however only ranks detailed content that covers a subject in depth thoroughly.

So as I was saying, I had them outline in bullet points the major facts they found as well as write small blurbs about the content. They went one step further and created in-depth transcriptions as well. This actually made the process better but much more difficult.

This ad worked perfectly because you can find writers, that from experience (the most vital point in finding a writer), can talk to your audience and cover your topic in-depth.

Google Loves In-Depth Content But That Isn’t Enough

Following this process helped me get 5 posts every 10 days—two weeks ready for the next steps to my master plan. This took around $1,000 of the budget and 30 hours of their time.

Here’s the exact process to make sure you didn’t miss it from the above:

  1. Copy the current content on-site and make a Google doc with research and add in points that need to be made. Transcribe points below the current content in the Google doc. This is the expert portion of the post. They’re the expert and we need their input. One important point here is to aim at making something better than what was ranking for that keyword already (Skyscraper technique style).
  2. We hired a writer while they were making the edits to take the edits and write them. We made sure that the writer had personal experience on the topic and had also been published in some major publications. This served as a way for us to assess their previous writing.
  3. The writer wrote their edits and shared the document for the revisions we requested. We then edited again and followed up in detail.
  4. The writer wrote a “content” locker report (Top 20 Things To, Best Ways To) for each piece of content utilizing the information we provided. It was basically a smaller, condensed version of the post with steps to use it in a pdf.
  5. We then made the on-site edits to the post and added the pictures. We also used stock images and made changes to the infographics to really cover the subject and to also make it visually appealing. This was done using Canva.
  6. We made a video using video blocks subscription and Camtasia (I had both) and made custom videos for each page. Youtube copyright free music was used as well.
  7. We used video SEO (bought as a gig from a seller) to SEO the videos for keywords. The gigs were less than 50 each because these were medium to easy keywords, especially on Youtube.

Now this is where we started working on conversion rate optimization, on-page SEO, and backlink building. We’ve spent around $1,400 dollars total at this point.

See, Google may love content and content may be king but the truth is that without SEO, Google wouldn’t be able to love your site. No matter what you publish, it will not just rank.

Content is expensive. You either spend hours writing or hours feeding your writer what to write and paying them in the process. Either way, it would cost a lot of time and money.

Link Insertions Because of Quality Content and Proof

So we dove right into working on their on-page SEO and started reaching out to blogs in their niche.

We gained close to 30 backlinks (using link insertion scripts) to each page on their site.

We did the outreach first and the on-page stuff came later. We figured we could get the links while we were fixing the site. Those kinds of links took more time and were more out of our control as opposed to doing internal linkings and titles. We did shorten URLs and came up with focus URLs on the keywords first. That way, the links were pointing to the correct places on the site.

We focused on niche sites that had a Domain Authority above 24. We randomly picked that number based on the site list we could gather.

Here is that process broken down for you:

  1. We now had amazing articles to request links for. We ran Screaming Frog and Ahrefs reports to find anyone linking to a few key articles in their niches that we had seen during research and I had them document those.
  2. We ran all sites and looked for niche sites. We compiled a pretty massive list of over 2,000 sites with a DA above 24 and a max DA of 55 to reach out to. We maxed the DA just to keep the large, hard-to-contact sites at bay. We wanted smaller niche sites that were focused and easier to contact. Typically these are “owner” sites and not corporate sites with editors. This list originally had more sites but then later got reduced when we chose the minimum DA of 24 to narrow down the search results.
  3. We prepared a drip sequence in Ninja Outreach to contact site owners. We referenced our new piece of content and the “current” outdated piece they were linking to. We asked if they would share and link to the new piece of content, citing the quality, and time we took to help educate the world.
  4. We inserted bonuses on their site for downloads (content lockers via Growtheme) to capture the audience that was going to the posts.
  5. We then ran a Ninja Outreach campaign looking for blogs to guest post on in their niche. This was a one-day project but we saved it for use later. We did have the writer get started on making the points about what was on some of these sites and which may bring more audience through guest posts.

On-Page SEO is Important!

We ran through the on-page SEO data fairly quickly. We adjusted URLs to be shorter and keyword specific. We had internal linking built around the site and followed a basic silo structure. We also had references throughout the site point to specific pages. So anywhere the word real estate was used, we linked to the real estate category page.

That page was a major piece of content that was extremely detailed in discussing real estate marketing and the local area effects of advertising. It also had an extensive walkthrough on how to utilize the information in the content as well as case studies about people that had studied and followed the same advice. Overall, it was highly detailed and 10 times better than what currently ranked for the key term.

Most of the case studies were from other sites and we “borrowed” them and their points. That kept the budget down so that we didn’t have to make our own case studies. This is an important point to note. Limited budgets meant crafty growth hacks need to be applied too!

We set up AMP and made sure the site was running HTTPS properly. We then went through and sped the sites up to the max. We had page load times down as far as we could go using “themes” and not re-coding anything heavily.

Mobile responsiveness, security, and page speed are three major ranking factors in Google. That’s why we focused our effort around them after doing internal linking.

That was the extent of the on-page SEO that we did for them.

Rankings Skyrocketed But Only After We Did This

So now we had backlinks from niche sites with great anchor text diversity to every page of the website. Each page had killer content with visually appealing graphics. We also had calls-to-action strategically placed throughout the site. Opt-ins were coming in because of the shout outs and social shares that were happening because of the efforts we’ve done.

We then ran a small social campaign.

We used various hashtags on Twitter and reached out to groups on Facebook and Google+. We asked the people to share and link to the resources. I don’t know how much this helped overall, honestly, but we did do it. I think we probably picked up a few links and definitely a good enough amount of results from it.

We then went after LinkedIn Groups and used Sales Navigator to message niche owners and influencers. Do the same and ask for shares or links. They already had a list compiled from their years of selling through these channels.

During this time, we had the writer churning out more content. They were making around 40 articles total that compiled all of the information that was on our site but just not as in-depth. These were quality articles that I had a specific plan for. The cost was right at $1,500 dollars. We had two writers and wish we had found a third but we just never did.

We used Getcontent.club and our own list of blogs we could guest post on. We sent out titles to the list of blogs with each having around 5 headlines that we “hacked” from headline swipe files. We had over a hundred blogs who we contacted write back to us.

That process was grueling. Have you ever came up with 500 headlines? We learned a lot doing it so I don’t want to leave that part out. It was significant as we moved forward. Those headlines all became posts or part of their content calendar later on.

The Rankings Shot Through the Roof

I was truly amazed at what happened next. Realize that we had been active on this campaign for a few months at this point. We had seen slight increases in rankings. Links to each page had put every page site-wide ranking in the top 20 for most of the key terms we were monitoring. Many of the pages were on the front page.

Front page sounds great and looks good but doesn’t get near the clicks that the first 3 spots on a search bring. Top 3 is the only place worth having in any search term. Especially when it comes to your targeted keywords.

When we published the guest post on Content Club, the rankings shot up. The DA 74 and DA 54 posts gave the site that huge boost of authority it needed.

We ended up publishing around 35 guest post on other sites. All in all, the effect was amazing.

Those guest posts were supported with a 2nd tier link push to each. We also had web 2.0’s sent to every page and a 2nd tier link push to each of those web 2.0 clusters as well. This was before the ranking increase because of a slow service provider. Tiered linking helped on the whole but it was after we had ranked the bulk of the content.

The Results From This Process

Each page had 40 links from relevant niche blogs:

  • Each page had at least 5 high authority links pointing to it
  • 2 Pages had DA 74 links from Content Club
  • 2 Pages had DA 54 links from Content Club
  • 2 Pages had DA 45 links from Content Club
  • On-page SEO with super in-depth content
  • Strategically advanced opt-in placements that converted like clock work
  • Content lockers that converted like clock work
  • Each page had videos that ranked in Youtube for keywords
  • Each page had infographics (we later submitted to infographic sharing sites for more links)
  • Highly detailed, 10X more in-depth information about each keyword and search query

Results:

  1. Over 1k unique visitors weekly
  2. 100 opt-ins monthly
  3. Residual sales on auto pilot
  4. Each page ranks for 5+ keywords in 1st position
  5. Each page ranks for 10+ keywords for top 10 positions
  6. Each page continually ranks for more and more content
  7. Social shares surpassed over 10k in total
  8. Facebook ads conversion increased 2X because of onsite CRO
  9. Videos rank in top 10 for search terms on Google results
  10. Success in every aspect

The sites went from no traffic organically to getting multiple requests weekly for people asking to feature their sites in case studies etc. They get guest post requests to this day still because of the emails we sent. The content continually grows in authority and rankings.

Their website is now an authority in their space. They have a perfect process for continually adding more keywords to their ranking. They also have a growing email list. They gain a few links every week because of the process. They continually reach out for link insertions to every piece of content they have. The content is that good and still gets them links.

Go back to the beginning of this post. They needed a process and they got just that. Their conversion rates are great. Their SEO is thriving. On average, it was one of the most well-executed campaigns we have run.

The Pre-Work Laid the Ground Work—Don’t Skip It

This was a strategic and researched campaign. It wouldn’t have worked if we wouldn’t have done thorough keyword research. We couldn’t have done any of that had the site owners not already chosen a niche and knew what product they wanted to sell.

Here is the process if you are just starting for the pre work I’m talking about:

  1. Choose the niche
  2. Choose the products you’re selling
  3. Choose the keywords
  4. List the top 3 resources ranking in top spots for those terms
  5. Choose your domain name and have WordPress installed
  6. Install Growtheme (click the paper airplane icon at the bottom of this site to check it OUT)
  7. Make your welcome gate and initial site setup
  8. Then start with the process I ran and documented in this article

Think long term process. If you build great content and do consistent, quality outreach then you can rank your website. We ended up spending around $5,000 dollars total on the project without my fees included.

As long as you phrase your questions from the perspective of a concerned potential customer, you may be surprised by how much information you can gain by simply asking over the phone. Since the goal of customer service is to satisfy customers, they often answer customer questions to the best of their abilities. Similarly, you can also contact suppliers and see what information they’re willing to share about your competition. This can be particularly easy if you share a supplier.

Subscribers Matter So Let’s Measure

I’ve been able to consistently grow subscribers. In fact, I have recently “re-engaged” my list to make sure everyone really wants to hear from me. I say that because it’s a measurement that matters. After all, the last thing you want is to keep on emailing people that aren’t even interested in what you have to say.

Let’s look at what matters when you’re blogging or guest blogging.

Key performance indicators or also known as KPIs are the measurements that matter to your business. Basically think of it like this, if it’s important then measure it. If it’s the single most important number then that’s a KPI for you. Cash flow is often considered as a KPI, for example.

So when you’re looking at growing a blog, you should focus on KPIs that make sense around blogging. Here are a few that I focus on:

I look at weekly, monthly, 90-Day, and 6-month views of these items:

  • Social Shares
  • Social Ads Stats
  • Unique VIsitors
  • Number of Visitors
  • Pageviews (highest to lowest)
  • Subscribers
  • Email Opens
  • Link Clicks on Emails Sent
  • # of posts scheduled
  • # of posts published

Growing subscribers is not extremely difficult. In fact, if you have a niche already down pat then it’s fairly easy. Make a simple call-to-action (use headline hacks swipe files to help you pick a converting headline) and then install a plugin with some sort of pop-up form. The Sumo plugin no doubt works great for this purpose. It has everything you’ll need for converting readers into subscribers on a WordPress site.

With that said, your daily and monthly routines should focus on growing your KPIs.

One aspect of this is how you set your calendar. If money is another important factor then you may want to add that into the mix as well. You want to have your KPIs set up for reporting. You need to lock in the time to review them and then decide on your path from there.

Basically, you’ll be writing and promoting your posts. So in order to know what’s working and what gives the best results, you need to review what’s causing your desired effect. That way, you can reproduce your wins and stop wasting time on pursuing activities that don’t really deliver anything for you. It’s really that simple!

KPI Focus Number One For Guest Posters: An Organized Calendar

I’ve been mentored by a few “millionaires.” There’s one I’ve never met and others that I paid to mentor me. The number one most distinguishing trait I can tell you about having success (all of them built their wealth and ran successful businesses) is that they ran an organized calendar.

They built their week with a purpose and had the discipline to focus and complete it. They didn’t put in bull-logney items. As Noah Kagan says, “If it doesn’t hit the one KPI then don’t even consider it.” That’s a kind of super micro focus—and that’s all you really need!

Multitasking is only meant for the kind of work you do in the corporate world. When you’re the only team member or the head of the company then you have to maintain super focus so mistakes are kept to a minimum. You also have to drive the results or else they don’t happen. And when they don’t happen for long enough…that’s the time that you fail. Ultimately, you then go out of business.

So set up your calendar. Realize that the content you’re posting in two weeks needs to be researched today. You then need to lay out the bullet points after that and write a killer headline with the information you have. After doing your research, let the info stew a bit with you so you have time to process everything!

Your calendar should cover your KPI and also the schedule for your writing time. You should also set time aside for promotion, social setup, and other similar activities. Once you’ve broken all the steps down, use CoSchedule and their templates to follow a process and repeat it. I definitely love that tool!

Getting to the Actual Work

One of the biggest things standing in the way of your blog thriving is content. I don’t even mean the content on your site. Just content. Period.

The best suggestion I have for bloggers is to create a landing page and start posting on Medium and other people’s blogs. This will give you a chance to study the audience you want to attract. You then write your email series as well as your Medium posts. Next is to write posts for other blogs. Figure out what people react to and what they find interesting. You’ll be growing your KPIs with that and gaining subscribers in the process too.

So in order to accomplish any of this—you have to write. We talked in a previous post about hiring writers. While it’s super important to have content coming out all the time, you don’t necessarily have to hire a writer. But I would. Even if I’m writing all the time, I love having additional content coming out at all times. It also makes the most sense for every KPI available. More content means more of everything!

With that said, whether you hire a writer or not, you have to continue writing yourself.

Writing Can Suck Big Time But Here’s How To Find Your Groove

I love to sit down either late at night or early in the morning (typically when life is calmer and phones don’t ding with texts) and I just write. I typically try to spend at least an hour daily writing.

That’s not how I always do it though. In fact, I will look up and go days without me writing anything at all. It’s not what I want really but there at time I just suck at it. Or I fail at writing big time. The key though is to go back and do it again even though I fell off the wagon.

For me, having a title is the most important part about writing. I need something to focus the topic around. I need something to really keep me on track since it gives me a singular focus. I want the article to be able to back up what I claim in the title. That means the research and the writing has to do all the heavy work so that things flow right after the title.

I think a big part of it, even if it’s kind of weird, is that my brain accepts the title as a rule about what I can or can’t write about.

It stops the “monkey” brain from running crazy and finding all kinds of cool stuff to include into the body. It focuses on that one topic I’m meant to deliver. I then walk through the writing process step by step until the title becomes evident in what I’m writing.

So I make the title and open the Hemingway App or Google Docs (I always run most of my stuff through those apps) and continue writing about the topic from there.

What I Write On and Where I Go to Write

For me, it matters what I’m writing on. When I’m at a desktop I feel less “emotional” and can’t write from a personal perspective as much. When I sit in my “thinking” chair then that’s the time I can really dial in.

I actually even bought a small little Chromebook just to write on. It can have a set of tabs open and I can pick up right where I left off from my last session.

This one small thing really works for me. Being able to login to a specific computer and write. It might be all that I do in that space but it really helps in ensuring that I get my writing done.

Typically, I can write a few thousand words in a few hours. That doesn’t mean I only write from my Chromebook. That’s just for the times when there’s something specific “assigned” to me or to guarantee my writing time. Depending on what’s going on, I’ll grab a few more hours and write more content.

Since I write for a few online publications as well as my personal and company blogs, I need to churn out a lot of content so I need to write a good deal. Amazing content and perspective is no doubt a quality asset especially if you want to make it online.

In a nutshell, my best advice would be to just write and see what happens. If you find it hard to start on a blank space, you can just focus on explaining the title in your own words and then adding more substance and data later. Find stuff you know about and enjoy writing or researching on. That could really help spur you to get your writing groove on.

Writing can be a really freeing activity and will draw you into the subject you’re writing about if you let it.

Follow writing blogs, writers, and of course, take some writing classes. Those will all build your confidence in your writing skills so you’re better prepared to take on the different content requirements you may need to succeed.

Different Kinds of Writing and How to Write Various Topics

Blog posts don’t have to be 2,000-word detailed, mega articles. They also don’t have to be brief 200-word thoughts. The cool thing is that if you have an audience that’s reading your content, you might want to mix things up from time to time.

Ryan Deiss has a blog post template that makes a ton of sense to me. It allows you to put 4 or 5 other articles and share the information in that manner. You write a short description about each item and then post a cool pic from the piece. Screenshots are fine to use here as well.

This is a great way to “bang out content” and really get quality information out while still focusing on your writing and conveying a solid opinion. You don’t necessarily have to think up or know anything. Think of it as you reporting on the subject.

Personally, I prefer to write in three formats:

  1. I love writing detailed “how to” posts that involve heavy theory and analysis. Deep research and tons of references are the hallmarks of this kind of content. While these huge articles get a lot of shares, I don’t see the most uptick in KPIs from these. I do enjoy them and they bring in great SEO and credibility. I post most of these on other people’s blogs. Search Engine Journal has few of my recent ones.
  2. Another preferred format of mine are personal experience and advice posts. Much like this article for example! I don’t have to do a lot of research but a good chuck of the content comes from my own personal experience. I’m just out there giving my advice and recommendations from what I’ve went through. This is targeted to my people. People that want to do online marketing and grow their website or blog. These post get the most feedback consistently. However, they can be a total miss sometimes.
  3. Much like the one I described above, I also write round-up posts. I take a few items and group them together. I wrote an article on SEJ about the 3 Underground SEOs That You Should Follow. This got the total most views in the said online publication for that month. This kind of post is a quick hitter and is easy to put together. I love to write it but they’re not necessarily challenging to me so I like mixing them in with other things instead of just doing the same thing every time. A post like this taps into a few things:
  1. You tap into their audience and they help you by sharing the article in their platform.
  2. You can social tag other authors and they may even share the info.
  3. You can post the article in social groups that have followers from a specific influencer.
  4. You have multiple people who mention the post so it gets shared more often.
  5. Readers love the brevity and quick info offered in this style of post.
  6. They are simple to research and write.

Writing and Promotion Calendar Setup and Final Words

Running your life has gotten you this far. Now it’s time to set your emotions aside and logically improve your daily routine.

That’s what I tell myself every time when the calendar alarm goes off and I don’t want to do the thing it’s telling me to do. I know that I have to do it anyway. Writing is tough when you don’t want to do it and the monkey part of our brain can be a real prohibitory factor.

I found that running my life using a calendar gets me more results than any other hack I can tell you. It takes discipline and planning. Both of which I suck at most of the time. Operating at a rate where 40% of my tasks are calendared, I’m still able to get 10 times the results!

Next time you’re struggling, take a break and put on brain.fm. It helps get you focused. You might think it’s weird but it really does work.

If I can succeed or have some semblance of success online because of a simple step such as setting up a calendar (coupled with a whole lot of learning) then you can SOAR as well—no doubt about that. If you’re thinking I have some leg up on you, I don’t. I actually get in my own way all the time. I can lack focus and discipline at times coupled with random times where all I want to do is to chase puzzles.

By this time, you must have perceived that work has to be systematized in order to be successful. Unfortunately, there is no other way around it. I don’t claim to have it all figured out by any stretch of anyone’s imagination. And for anyone reading this, I’d like to make the disclaimer that what I’m outlining here is only my “opinion.” One that’s based on my personal experience.

I actually know a lot of people who have listened or heeded what many various online “gurus” have said. From what they say, I think many of the advice is just plain sketchy. For instance, the advice  “just publish daily” isn’t real. It doesn’t work and is just a plain waste of your time and effort.

One of the most common mistakes I see is when bloggers start writing for themselves. Unless you’re some celebrity or an extremely interesting persona, this tactic would never fly if you want an audience. Sooner or later, you’ll realize that you’d need to write for the kind of audience you want to attract.

Why? Because your audience dictates your success. You need to understand them and evoke the right emotional responses from them. This, of course, requires research and “synergy.” which is also an art form and not just science.

The hardest piece of this puzzle is being able to intentionally attract a real audience that’s close to your ideal. I can tell you that narrowing down the scope of your target audience makes this process a lot simpler. What I mean is that if you learn to blog to a small group of people that are truly passionate then it’s easier to scale from there. It’s easier because you just have to do more of the things that have worked for you so far!

When you feel connected to your audience, it’s no longer just a “public content” you put out there. It becomes a personal conversation between you and your audience. Since attention and interaction draw people in, your blog visitors will see what you’re putting out there and will then “crave it” if they like the way you’re engaging them. Once you form that kind of connection, you’ll then be able to form a level of trust that you haven’t thought possible before.

Blog to a Small Group of People—Be Selective of Your Audience

When you start your blog it’s imperative (big words coming out now—watch out) that you choose your audience correctly. Everything and I mean everything, can contribute to your success.

Your website is the first and often times, only interaction you will ever have with “your audience.” That’s why when take together—your domain name, your site design, and an above-the-fold layout becomes an important way to grab the attention of your audience.

Selecting your audience should be based on your “niche.”

I know that the word is a bit overused but often never truly explained. It sounds easy in theory yet sites like nichehacks.com are around for a reason. It’s super hard for us as humans to say NO to anything and that more is merrier. We feel pigeonholed when we select a tiny niche. We look at Google Keywords and think we need something with tons of searches. We don’t want to miss the big ticket terms that people are searching for.

Let’s take a deep dive into the word here in order for me to prove my point.

Did You Notice the Actual Word Classified In The Definitions?

That means that if you’re going to blog for a “niche” then you are in fact limiting yourself. That is, by the very definition of the word, the whole point of taking that step. Yet, mentally at least, we struggle to “niche” down on anything.

That’s definitely a big mistake to make because if you fail to niche down then you aren’t going to attract the best kind of audience to read what you’re writing. As the saying goes, “Trying to please everyone, pleases no one.” Don’t make the same mistake I did in the past. Find a small audience and blog the hell out in order to cater them. Your website will grow 10 times faster because of it.

How to Know If You’ve Niched Down or Not

This is a big part of the process and there are a couple of pointers I’ll be outlining in order to properly make my point. Realize that’s how important this is. It’s the most important step you can take. Period. Until you select an audience to truly talk to, you won’t be able to talk your best.

Niching down can be a clarifying process to your writing that it is the most important step to becoming a great writer. That cleanse is because for once, you actually know who you’re speaking to. You know their life. You know their drama and you know their pain and problems.

This is the biggest test of niching down at least for me. If I can think of more than 30 people in my city that this blog is for then my audience is probably too broad.

BOOM.

Clarity. For me that really did it. I realized that if I was writing to chiropractors (a small but not super small niche) that I still passed this rule. The only one that really doesn’t apply here is mommy bloggers. I hope there are more than 30 moms in your town—same with dads or athletes.

For me, I focus on what people are interested in. I then dissect it until I find a small sub segment that I can start in. Then I find all their online communities. I live there for a while and then I answer questions or ask them on Quora myself.

All of that comprises my introductory research. I then apply a survey funnel and get started making the blog.

Don’t Get Lost in a Sea of Advice

That’s where I find myself so many times when it comes to trying to figure out what my next step is. There are a lot of advice on the internet and if you don’t know which ones to heed, you can get jaded pretty quickly. This is where niching down can be hard. I have heard it so many times and yet I still miss it so often.

This, my friends, is called ad blindness except it’s a different type—let’s call it advice blindness. (See what I did there?)

The advice to niche down is everywhere. It’s everyone’s by word and often the first step in so many manuals and guides. It’s also the “writer’s advice” in almost every blogging course ever made out there. The biggest claim? It’s how millions are made online. Yet… I didn’t practice it.

This made me start really looking at how I had missed such a critical piece of advice for so long. I mean I even wrote about niching down and told others this often repeated advice. It then hit me that I was giving advice that I wasn’t following myself.

I remember making decisions so many times about large websites and deciding not to niche down because I would miss some “traffic.”

How did I miss it? Was I stupid?

The answer was yes.

LOL. 🙂

Not really. I just felt that way.

Was I Blind Or Just Really Bad At This?

The truth was I had developed advice blindness. I was blind to general advice that worked. I had gotten used to having “blinders” of sorts on at all times. I didn’t want to get bad advice so anything that was being preached online as the “norm” was scrutinized heavily.

My mental scrutiny put good advice into a “reserved for further deliberation” category. I wasn’t labeling the advice of niching down as bad… I was simply throwing the baby out with the bath water. I had failed to really understand and apply the advice.

I’m writing about this strange occurrence because it pained me and it also caused me to miss tons of money because of it. I don’t want you to suffer the same problems.

Niching down might be a general advice but a real and amazing one, nonetheless.

Take the time to really dive in and understand what it means. Make sure you’re niched down as far as you can go. Especially if this is your first site or your first-time venturing out in the world of online marketing. Make sure your niche is well chosen and small enough that you can focus on people instead of subjects.

Don’t develop ad…vice blindness. Follow an advice if it’s reasonable and study it. Define it and gain clarity. It’ll make you a better blogger and person no doubt.

Breaking Rule 1 Is Sometimes Amazing!

Tim Ferriss talks about how he selected his products in his podcasts. Tim is responsible for more “digital nomads” than anyone can attribute a number to. His book, The 4-Hour Work Week, inspired and “corrupted” so many people to start “living like the new rich.” This dream of 4-hour work weeks with automated processes running an online selling machine has sent many a blogger to buying hosting plans and starting their journey in the online realm.

Tim is super successful. He offers amazing advice and is “built different” than most of us. He has a way of finding principles that matter and getting spectacular results because of it.

I say all that to say the following: He focuses his products on a very specific kind of individual. He builds stuff that he would want. That’s it. He figures at if there’s at least one other person who is similar to him then there must be more.

He wrote the book (the best selling and the huge hit) 4-Hour Work Week focusing on just one friend.

There’s power in writing for yourself or just one specific person. This is different in the sense that you no longer have to take into account different people but only on a specific type of individual, you’d like to attract. I think that in some respect, it’s the same advice. You are still focused on the audience but you’re able to sum up that person down to just one figure in your head.

That’s actually the perfect advice to follow up to rule 1 where you have to put your audience first. You should be able to distill your target audience down to your perfect persona. This is how you do it. You focus all of your writing as if you were talking to that one person through a personal conversation.

This gives you the perfect audience—close enough that the conversation actually gains clarity. That’s the reasoning behind it. You focus on one person and more importantly, their results. You’re helping that person navigate through something that you know.

You are the navigator (bad 80’s movie reference, sorry).

Super Powerful Concepts Are Needed But Where’s The Teacher?

You’re probably realizing now that you being the navigator means you have to know the map. That’s correct. You have to understand the concepts you’re teaching and writing about well enough to be able to help others. There are a few paths where you can be the “crash test dummy” or the “leader” in your online adventure.

Either way, you’re going to help others find their way around.

You’re going to help them push through the hard times.

You’re going to help them keep keepin’ on.

You’re going to help them think about answers to questions they hadn’t even considered yet.

In all of that, it can get scary. You don’t know all this stuff!

Passion, Hard Work, And Research Are All You Need.

It was explained to me like this:

Do you remember that movie (true story) “Catch Me If You Can.” There was a part there where Frank Abagnale taught as the teacher in a college. He was a student (or impersonating) one at the time. When the FBI caught him and asked him how he did it? He said simply, “I just read one chapter ahead.”

That’s the secret. You just have to study ahead of your audience. You have to be one chapter ahead.

I coach basketball (I volunteer at a private school) and this principle applies here as well. While I have experience in playing a lot of sports in school, I had no idea how to coach.

Whats even crazier?

I’m really good at it.

The teams I coach win championships. They even got 2nd in Nationals. That’s on the high school level.

Here Was The Secret Of My Success

I spot talent and know the players better than they know themselves. I studied Youtube videos and coaching websites and then I applied a set of plays and playing style that fit our talent. I focused on precision and execution. I made it fun for them…

Those were the major points.

From nowhere, I developed coaching skills.

I developed winning players.

Players that are actually getting college scholarships.

I helped teams win.

The most important thing about doing all those is that I read one chapter ahead. Not just one chapter ahead of my players… but also one chapter ahead of even the other coaches. (HAHA).

What Really Makes Or Breaks Success

The last major point in my success as a coach was the relationships I formed. I have and will always have a deep connection with all of those players.

We became family. They still come to the office and we play dumb video games and talk life. They want to be around me. I love hanging out with them.

As they get older, these players will become dads. They will become businessmen.

They will grow up, hopefully soon :).

That relationship will still be there. If any of them need anything and fall on hard times they know they can just call Coach Will.

One day, they hopefully coach a team. They may even talk about me like I talked about the people that coached me.

Cool Circle But Weird, Right?

Maybe you’re not coaching but you’re developing relationships and growing an audience.

Impacting others in a positive way is the goal, correct? Develop a real relationship and stay one chapter ahead. Be there regardless of their status and they know they can turn to your website to read and interact. Make it so that they know you’re just one reply away. There’s power in being acknowledged like that.

Keep On Doing Outreach But Don’t Spam People!

My last major point pertains to how to grow your blog.

Know that as part of your blog’s growth, you’ll need to reach out to tons of people. You’ll need to develop relationships with anyone that has a similar audience to yours.

This can seem endless but the trick is to not get overwhelmed.

How I Would Start Growing a Blog Today 

If I were to start growing a blog today, I would start with blogging on Medium.

Medium offers a huge exchange of information. People that are in your niche are already there reading others. If you share your content across it then more people will see it naturally than if it was just published on your own blog.

Build A One Page Lander And The Blog On Medium

I would build a single page lander using the Growtheme (click at the footer on the paper airplane). I would choose the domain first obviously. I would set up the hosting and put up that one pager.

Then I would go off and start writing on Medium. I would comment and follow everyone on Medium that’s in my niche. Once I found my voice I would start using Medium to push people to articles on my website. I would obviously hook up MailChimp to my list so I can start growing that from the one pager I put up.

List Building Is The First Goal

I would write out 10 to 15 emails that are auto dripped out to anyone who signs up. Often, this means I have to make some videos or content to drip out. I would later come back and send out each blog post as they were made, done in order so that each content is always being pushed out to people.

When a content is relevant, even if it’s not the “latest,” then it’s able to provide value. Evergreen content gets better even if it’s been published for quite some time. Just make sure you check your old content as you update your blog or when there’s any change worth noting.

Run Small Social Campaigns To Boost Traffic And See What Works

I would also run $5 dollar Facebook campaigns to every post. I would study the results to see what people are reacting to the most.

I would find 15 to 20 other blogs and contribute at least 3 times there. This is just so the audience gets used to you a bit. If I see a spike from a specific guest post, then I would blog more frequently.

I would use Quupromote and promote the blog posts that have the most shares from my Facebook tests.

Test Headlines Then Test More Click Bait Headlines

I would test headlines multiple ways—and always. Headlines are click bait and the first interaction that anyone has with your content so make sure you give it your best shot. Test the headlines on CoSchedule’s headline analyzer in order to maximize its impact.

I would setup an outreach campaign. This is the nuts and bolts of growth. When you can use software like Ninja Outreach and find those 20 blogs to guest post on then you’re firing on all cylinders.

Setup the outreach to get you in front of the right people and spark relationships. Offer incentives. Buy a Facebook page or Instagram account that has followers in your niche. Use it to jumpstart your brand but also as bait.

Send emails to your “influencers” that say something like this:
