10 Questions To Help You Choose Website Designers

What Questions Should You Ask In A Web Designer

Getting a professionally designed website is a great way to improve your businesses image. Take for example the website Simply Thick. It is simple but tells the story. A common problem you will have with weeding out all of the web designers on the market is trying to figure out which one you should hire. You may have never had to do this before and even if you have hired multiple employees in the past, the Internet and hiring people to do website work for you is kind of a gray area.

Since this is the case, you should know about the questions you should ask before you hire a web designer. By asking these questions and getting an answer, it will make it easier for you to find a great designer that will actually be able to do the job you want them to do.

What Type Of Experience Do You Have?

This is just a basic question that you would want to ask any employee you would be hiring. Obviously, this is going to revolve more around the experience they have at getting the website design completed. This will help you know if the person is just talking the talk or if they are one that has managed to walk the walk as well. So it is important for you to ask about what experience they have.

1. What Have They Worked With As A Content Management System

Even if you have never used a website before, you have probably seen commercials for WordPress, Wix, Weebly, or several other website building programs. While you may not understand these programs, you will want to make sure you know about the programs they have worked with in the past to help you know if you are going to get a website that is going to look great but at the same time be versatile enough for you to get the information out in a useful way for your customers.

2. What Types Of Websites Have You Worked On?

This is an important question for you to ask. That is because this is a question that will let you know if they have experience working on a website like what you are wanting or not. For example, if the person has only worked on building a website for marketing then they could probably do really well at building a website for selling products as well. So this is definitely a major consideration that you will want to make because this is going to make it easier for you to know if you are hiring the right person.

If the person has only developed a content-based website, then you may not be able to get the work done how you want. While the designer may be able to do the work, it may not end up laid out how you would expect it. So this is definitely a consideration that you would want to make when you are hiring a new web designer.

3. Can You See The Websites They Worked On

Just like an artist who is going to have a portfolio for you to view, you will find a web designer has a tendency to have the same thing. So you will want to ask to see what kind of websites they have worked on in the past. Sometimes they can show you some of the websites, but other times they may have signed a non-disclosure agreement that they cannot show you the site. So you will want to make sure you ask about the sites they have worked on.

If they are unable to show you any of the sites they have worked on, then you may want to see if they can provide you with a concept of what they would like to do with your website. When you are getting this type of work done, it will make it easier for you to know if the website will be done right and if it will start to look like what you are wanting to have in your website. Sometimes the mockup will be on paper, but other times it can even be something the designer is able to put together on their own really quickly to give you a rough idea on what they would have your website look like.

4. How Did The Websites Do Once Completed

This is a question that can be loaded as the designer may just have the handling of getting the website put together and not have any control over the content. However, sometimes the designer will have complete and total control over the website and will start with the design aspect and go all the way to the content that is being found on the website.

When you are asking how the websites performed you will want to know more about the design aspect. This will include what kind of errors the sites may have, how the user experience has been, and how happy the customer was with the website. This way you can start to get a feel for how the website is going to work for your business and know if the designer is open to making the changes you request and if the users are actually enjoying the website or if they find it clunky and not user-friendly.

5. How Many Revisions Are You Able To Make

As much as the designers want to get the job done right the first time, this is something that usually does not happen. It could be something as simple as the website having a misspelling in one of the categories. However, this would require the designer to make a change to the website and this is definitely something that you need to know if they are willing to do. So you will want to find out how many changes they are willing to make the design for the price you are paying.

You also will want to make sure you get clarification on the difference between a minor and a major change for the designer. For example, a minor change could be something that is going to be the spelling changes as it takes very little time to make. At the same time, though, if you are looking to get a redesign of the home page you may find it will take additional time and can be considered as a major change so you should find out how many of these are allowed by the designer before they charge extra.

6. Communication Issues And How To Solve Them

When you are working with a designer, if you are like most people, you will be very anxious and want to see the results quickly. Since this is the case, you will want to make sure you know how closely the designer will communicate with you or your team. You will also want to know how they are going to communicate with you.

At the very least you will want to get a weekly update on the website design process. If they are not willing to do this, then you may find they are loading themselves down with multiple projects. Even a simple email with an update of information weekly would be the best option for you to consider when you are using the designers.

Something else that is important to consider is how they are going to communicate changes. This could change they need to make or you need to make. Either way, you should make sure you know how to communicate the changes and how much of a headway they are going to need to know about the changes.

7. How Long Will It Take To Get The Design Started

The starting of the design is going to allow you to get an idea on the website and how it will look. Since this is the case you should know how long it will take before the designer is able to work on the site. If they are going to take a long time to get the work done, then you will find it may not work for your needs. If they are able to do the design quickly, then you could easily reach your deadlines or even move a product launch to coincide with the launch of your website.

8. Can I Contact You For Future Updates

Generally when you have hired a designer and you are happy you will want to make sure they make the changes to the site. That is because they know the coding they used and know how the website works and already know what you are expecting in the way the website will work. However, not all the designers will want to go back in and work on an old project again. So you need to find out if you need to have changes made in the future if you can contact the designer to make them and if you will get a return customer discount.

9. Is Any SEO Integrated

While having a website is a great thing, if you are not getting the website found in the search engines it will not do you any good. Since this is the case, you will want to make sure you know if the designer is going to integrate any type of search engine optimization or not. If the designer is integrating this type of information then you will have an easier time in getting the website found by the search engines versus not having it found at all. If they are integrating SEO work in the website, the cost may seem quite a bit higher, but marketing and search engine optimization on the Internet can literally run into a million dollars a month for some companies.

10. How Much Will It Cost?

This is the key thing that you need to ask and get a good answer on. This will allow you to know if the site is financially feasible for your company or not. At the same time, you will want to know what is included in the cost as well. So you will want to make sure you get a written contract on what is included in the cost along with all the other points we made noted.

Finding a web designer is different than hiring an employee. A lot of times you will find the designers are going to work as an independent contractor and be their own boss. However, at the same time, they have a great education and can easily give you a great looking website if you ask the right questions.
